I believe in the many health benefits of juicing from raw fruits and vegetables. I have been juicing every day for more than 20 years, as it is the most efficient food source of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Enzymes increase the rate at which foods are broken down and absorbed by the body. When you juice fresh fruits and vegetables the juice is extracted from the fiber, which allows those nutrients to be more easily absorbed into the blood stream. Cooking destroys the enzymes. This is why fresh raw fruits and vegetables from juicing will give you greater energy and health than the cooked foods.
Juicing for Life
Years ago I read a book called “Juicing for Life” by Nutritionist Cherie Calbom. Her formula for good health is to “eat fiber-rich foods like fruit and vegetable salads, whole grains, and legume dishes made with beans, lentils or split peas. Drink two to four glasses of fresh juice daily. Reduce—or, better yet, eliminate—your consumption of junk foods, sweet treats, and refined foods.
Juicing can help eliminate a number of disorders from acne to water retention to inflammation and weight loss. Especially the use of green juice. I truly believe it is essential to have at least one green juice per day. Because nothing more therapeutic exists on Earth than green juices.
Juicing for Beginners
There are several juicers available in low to high price-points and several different juicing methods. The juicer I prefer is the Omega 8006. It is lightweight, easy to clean and does a thorough job of pressing the juice from the pulp.
If you’re just getting started, I recommend trying a mixture of vegetables and fruits. Be sure to wash your fruits and vegetables before juicing and keep your cutting surfaces clean. Spinach is a very mild green and may be your best “first” green juice ingredient.
Green Juice Recipe
2 pears or apples, 2 handfuls of spinach, 2 stalks celery, ½ inch piece of ginger root and the juice of one lemon. Wash and chop all ingredients. No need to peel. Put everything in the juicer and drink immediately.
Anti-Inflammatory Juice Recipe
4 stalks celery, ½ cucumber, 1 cup pineapple, ½ green apple, 1 cup spinach, ½ inch piece of ginger and the juice of one lemon. Wash and chop all ingredients. No need to peel. Put everything in the juicer and enjoy right away.
Healthy Juice Cleanse
A “juice fast” can reset the body and promote good health. A juice fast means that you drink only fresh pressed juices for a period of time, of your choice. If you’re just getting started it may be good for you to follow a program, so that you get all of the nutrients you need during this time.
